the number is a good number for obama. if i were him i would be going out there trumenting it all over the place saying we finally turned this around. is he going to do that? , he is. >> here is the way to look at it. there are a lot of americans out there. they know they don't have the income they had four years ago. they know they are not fully employed like they want to be or once were. so it's kind of like if you have pain and you just can't deal with it and you go to a doctor and he says you are fine, you are doing terrific. what do you do say i guess i'm making it up or do you say i better find another doctor? i think mitt romney has a great opportunity to say you can either believe the facts of the economy you are living every day of your life or you can believe your lying eyes here. >> how do americans -- do most every day americans look at 7.8 and 8.1. >> they are looking at gas prices. when they squeeze that handle on the pump, they know they are paying nearly 4 and 5 bucks a gallon. when they get their paycheck

whether it's romney or obama let me do it my way. if i were obama what would i do? first of all let me show you. i'd come out with a 2 x 4. no no, say that line about the 5 trillion-dollar again. go ahead say it. >> romney: i'm not in favor of a 5 trillion-dollar tax cut. that's not my man. my plan is not to put in any tax cut that will effect the deficit. i will bring down the deductions and taxes at the same time so the revenue stays in. >> cenk: yeah, yeah, that sounds good. you're going to do a 20% tax cut across the board. then a 2 trillion-dollar increase in the defense budget. then you're going to keep most of the popular deductions. and then you're going to balance the budget. and then you're going to give everybody a free unicorn! that's not how it works mitt! you're lying! there is no 5 trillion-dollar in deductions that you take away from just the rich. that's preposterous. and i'm not going to let you get away with it. one wonders how long i will keep this 2 x 4 that is actually not a 2 x 4 on my shoulder, but we move forward. he says, well, before i go

maybe obama saw this because the significance of the last 3 1/2 years in the obama presidency is there was never cooperation or rarely cooperation. no or very few bipartisan agreements. the only time they did something was when they brought joe biden in to negotiate with the republicans. so maybe obama sensed that. but i don't know -- it's worthy to investigate. >> sean: yeah. one theory i have, i want to ask you one more question about your theory. i would argue, $6 trilon in debt, very hard to explain away. i would argue that, you know when 2012 economically is worse than 2011, which was worse than 2010, unemployment in 2012, fewer jobs in this year than last year and the year before. things are trending down. obviously, that's troubling for the president in terms of trying to defend it. but back to your theory, if he was so bad that there something else going on, that could be troubling in and of itself. you know, we need presidents that are strong. you know, bill clinton, as critical as i was during monica lewinsky, you have to hand it to him, his ability to compartmentalize, do hi

and what would you propose alternatives, and better than president obama does? >> he did both of those, went right at the obama record and something the president declined to talk about himself and went deep on his tax policy and his health policy, so he put some entirely new baseline for the election. >> paul: kim, there are a lot of republicans were willing to start writing off mitt romney if he didn't do welcome. i mean, there really were. and they were worried that his fund raising might fall off and there would be a big problem. so, is there new momentum, new optimism on the republican side? >> no worries about the fund raising dropping off now, i tell you that. i mean, you have not seen this much enthusiasm for mitt romney since he's ever run, going back to 2008. but i think because he went out there and talked about ideas, this is what the republicans have been arguing he needed to do all along because you can't say it's a choice you've got to prove it's a choice. that's what he did in denver. the most important thing he did, he explained the choices very

when you went head-to-head with obama in 2008, the polls said 51% obama, 38% mccain. do you think you would have done better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then senator obama had no record to defend, and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was -- i think very legitimately, attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that he pointed -- the failure of dodd-frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time, but one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit or something of a bot today. >> we've got the vp debate comin
